We all know eucalyptus. When we travel in the trains of Kerala, we see vendors selling eucalyptus oil. The remedy for our health issues. Eucalyptus oil is an anti-inflammatory, antispasmodic, decongestant, deodorant, antiseptic, antibacterial, stimulating andalso contains other medicinal properties. Eucalyptus essential oil is colourless and has a distinct taste and odour. It is a good and effective medicine for respiratory problems, wounds, skin care, mental exhaustion, dental care, muscle pain and fever. It’s also use as room freshener, soap, sauna and mouth wash. We have to admit, it’s a magic oil to cures so many problems. And because these properties, it’s an oil with high demand. To fulfil the supply, huge Eucalyptus plantations are being developed.

Every Eucalyptus plantation is a replacement of other trees. So for nature it should be good, we are replacing tree with tree! But it’s disappointing to know that, a tree that is so useful to human is a bad companion for other tree in the nature. The real problems with these trees are that their roots suck the water and nutrients from the surrounding soil completely, which makes growth of other plants and trees around them impossible. Eucalyptus globulushas dense shade and only a few plants grow in such shade.

For ecological balance we need all species of plants and animals, but due to the high demand of Eucalyptus, a tree is being the cause of deforestation. Every tree is important, we can’t replace once they are extinct. So we need to save them now.
